SGS runs a Climate Change Programme that offers a range of services designed to protect the environmental and financial integrity of emission trading schemes. Services include the validation and verification Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) Projects and Joint Implementation (JI) Projects under the Kyoto Protocol; verification of GHG emissions from legal entities participating in the EU Emission Trading Scheme, the UK Emission Trading Scheme, the California Climate Action Registry and others. SGS uses skills and expertise throughout the Group to assemble teams that provide environmental, data auditing and technical skills to complete the engagement and deliver a reliable opinion. We use desk studies to evaluate compliance, local staff to verify assumptions and, where necessary, site visits in order to reach a conclusion. Throughout the engagement, we seek and collect objective evidence to support our opinion and we do not rest until we are confident that the opinion is correct. We then use an independent decision-maker to approve the team’s recommendation. On this basis, we are prepared to stand by our opinion.
